Frequently Asked Questions

What does the SVG export contain?

Two color-separated layers: a cut layer (red strokes by default) for the sign outline and any mount holes, and an engrave layer (black fills) for the text and symbol. Most laser software (LightBurn, LaserGRBL, xTool Creative Space, Glowforge) treats different colors as different operations.

What size sign should I design?

Common sizes: 280×110 mm for an address sign, 220×130 mm for a family sign, and 200×110 mm for a garden marker. The default 280×110 mm fits a 4-digit street number with the road name beneath it. The width and height sliders go up to 500×300 mm if you're cutting a larger plaque.

Should I convert text to outlines before cutting?

Yes — text in the exported SVG uses a system font (Arial Black / Impact). Open the file in your laser software and convert text to paths (LightBurn: "Convert to Path", Inkscape: "Path → Object to Path") so the engraving renders identically regardless of which fonts are installed on the cutting computer.

Can I drill holes for screws?

Yes — the Mount Holes toggle in Advanced adds two cut-through circles near the top of the sign for hanging hardware. The hole diameter, side inset, and top inset are all adjustable. For a peaked sign the holes automatically shift below the peak so they sit in the rectangular section.

Do I need to create an account?

No. The Sign Designer runs entirely in your browser. No sign-up, no tracking — your designs stay on your device.
