How to Find a Free Makerspace Near You (Library 3D Printers & Laser Cutters)

An everyday first-time maker at a bright public-library makerspace, using a desktop 3D printer with a freshly made part in hand and library shelving behind them

You've got an idea — maybe even a build-ready file — but you don't own a 3D printer or a laser cutter. That's where most first-time makers get stuck. The Free Makerspaces Map fixes it: a free map of public-library makerspaces across the U.S., now ranked by how close they are to you. Here's how to use it.

Open the map

Head to the Free Makerspaces Map. It runs right in your browser — no account, nothing to download. Browse the pins, each one a library branch with maker equipment.

Find the makerspaces nearest you

This is the part that does the heavy lifting. Share your location and the map ranks the closest library branches to you — out of more than 734 across the country — so you're not guessing which one is actually reachable. No location? You can still browse the whole map by hand.

See what's inside before you go

Each pin shows the equipment that branch offers — 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and more. Hover a pin for a quick preview, or open it for the details and a link to the library's own site, so you know it has the machine you need before you make the trip.

Pack a library card and a USB stick

Most library makerspaces are free to use — you generally just need a library card. Bring your design on a USB stick (an SVG for laser cutting, an STL for 3D printing), and don't be shy about asking staff: many branches run short orientations and are glad to help first-timers get started.

Don't have a design yet? Make one first

If you're starting from scratch, the free design tools on DesignerBee turn an idea into a build-ready SVG or STL in minutes — no design software, no experience needed. Every tool page also has a “Don't have the tools?” link that brings you right back to this map.

Before you go

Check the branch's guidelines for booking, time limits, and any small fees for consumables like filament or sheet material. Make sure your file is sized and ready, and you'll walk in prepared to make.

That's it — from “I don't have the machine” to “I know exactly where to go.” Find your closest makerspace, walk in, and bring your idea to life.
